Background & Evolution

By webmestre , 26 January 2026
  • 2004: guifi.net (initial version)
Built with Drupal 6, this was the first version to provide broad functionality for building community networks supporting wireless technologies within guifi.net. Starting in central Catalonia, it soon expanded to other regions and communities.
At that time, it had to implement features that were highly innovative for the period, such as network visualization on maps, configuration provisioning, and address management—well before specialized open tools like OpenStreetMap, TR-069, or IPAM managers existed. As a result, much of the functionality relied on custom developments.
These advanced features were crucial to the early growth and success of guifi.net.
  • 2020: network.guifi.net
With the introduction of fiber-optic networks, some required functionalities were missing in the existing platform, leading to the exploration of other partial solutions. However, none offered a complete fit.
Recognizing this gap, development began on a second-generation platform, still based on Drupal but upgraded to version 9, and named network.guifi.net. This generation focused on supporting fiber connectivity while maintaining the legacy version for wireless networks in parallel. The long-term goal was convergence, anticipating the integration of more mature open components to reduce custom development and maintenance costs.
  • 2026: commons.guifi.net (this)
Under the name commons.guifi.net, this third generation continues improving and consolidating functionality to better support commons-based and diverse community networks, merging the previously parallel versions into a unified platform.
